From The Desk Of Cursive’s Tim Kasher: Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret”

timlogocCursive frontman Tim Kasher continues his graphic storytelling on sixth album Mama, I’m Swollen, out this week on Saddle Creek. He keeps it blunt and lyrically entertaining on the Omaha group’s moodiest LP yet, with song themes ranging from masturbation to tales starring Pinocchio. Kasher is guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with him.

cabaret460The other day, I was asked what my favorite “music-related” film was. After giving it some thought (definitely going with a musical over music docs or live concert footage … West Side Story?), I went with Cabaret. I really loved Cabaret, and yes, it stars Liza Minnelli. And hey, I just looked her up and her birthday was yesterday, March 12! Happy birthday, Liza. You may have some reservations about Liza Minnelli being in this film. I did. But that was before I found out Bob Fosse directed it. Bob Fosse was one of the great directors of the 1970s, though he was probably more revered for his work as a master choreographer. And Minnelli is excellent in this film! It’s a young, adorable version of Liza (not to say I don’t appreciate her role in Arrested Development). I was first turned on to Fosse when I saw Lenny, an amazing film about comedian Lenny Bruce starring a young Dustin Hoffman. (More about Hoffman later this week.) And check out Cabaret—Joel Grey won an Oscar for his performance.
