In The News: Steve Wynn, Beastie Boys, Joan Of Arc, Blur, Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson And Free MP3s

stevewynn550Steve Wynn And The Miracle 3 are commemorating the 25th anniversary of Medicine Show, the second record from Wynn’s previous band, psych/rock trailblazers the Dream Syndicate, with shows in New York City on June 27 and Los Angeles on July 9. Similar to the band’s 2007 gigs marking 25 years since the Dream Syndicate’s The Days Of Wine And Roses debut, Wynn (pictured) and Co. will be playing Medicine Show start to finish for the first time. “I always loved (Medicine Show) and felt it has lived in the shadows of The Days Of Wine And Roses,” says Wynn. “So it will be nice to have a couple of nights to let it stand up on its own and see how it stands up to a quarter of a century.” Download a live version of “Merrittville” … In less-interesting anniversary news, ever wonder what happened to the Donnas of “Take If Off” fame? Yeah, neither have we. But the band is celebrating its 16th year together with The Donnas’ Greatest Hits, Vol. 16 (see what they did there?) July 7 on their Purple Feather Records … Beastie Boys return this fall (exact date to be determined) with their eighth record, Hot Sauce Committee (Capitol). In addition to headlining Lollapalooza on August 8, the hip-hop goofballs’ remastered and expanded Ill Communication, originally released in 1994, is out July 14 … Supporting the new Art Brut Vs. Satan (Downtown), the British art punks in Art Brut kick off a U.S. tour June 1 with a five-night stand at NYC’s Mercury Lounge. Continuing on that theme, the group is also playing a five-night stint at Schubas in Chicago June 8-12 … Joan Of Arc is in the middle of a short stretch of European dates, but it won’t be playing any five-night stands. The group’s new effort, Flowers (Polyvinyl), blooms June 9. Download “Explain Yourselves #2” … Woo-hoo! Midlife: A Beginner’s Guide To Blur (Capitol/EMI) is a two-CD compilation out July 28 that spans Blur‘s seven LPs. The collection includes “Popscene,” a 1992 single that’s currently out of print … Wheat returns July 21 with White Ink, Black Ink (The Rebel Group); a string of summer tour dates include a June 13 gig at Ribfest in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood … In 2006, former MAGNET cover boy Pete Yorn, for some reason, came up with the idea of doing a duets LP with actress Scarlett Johansson. (We’re guessing it was her rack, as the notion predates ScarJo’s abysmal debut record of Tom Waits covers, Anywhere I Lay My Head.) The resulting effort, Break Up (Atco), is being released September 8 and features eight Yorn originals and a take of Chris Bell’s” I Am The Cosmos,” which confirms the iffiness of the entire proposition.
