Under The Covers With Matthew Sweet And Susanna Hoffs: Cats

sweethoff100c119The duo of Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet may be the perfect assimilation of vocal chops and instrumental savvy, as shown on a pair of recent albums titled Under The Covers (Shout! Factory), with volume one re-examining big hits from the ’60s and volume two tackling the ’70s. The track record for Hoffs and Sweet speaks for itself. Hoffs’ band, the Bangles, was the only member of the hallowed Paisley Underground scene to sell more than a handful of records, cracking the national top-30 no fewer than eight times from 1986-89. Sweet’s breakthrough album was 1991’s Girlfriend, which paved the way for later power-pop classics like Altered Beast and 100{e5d2c082e45b5ce38ac2ea5f0bdedb3901cc97dfa4ea5e625fd79a7c2dc9f191} Fun. The pair plans to take an acoustic version of their Under The Covers act on the road in September, but in the meantime is guest editing magnetmagazine.com all this week. Read our Q&A with them.

Matthew Sweet: What can I say? I love the creatures as much as I do humans! Sensitive and standoffish, wily and sweet, they remind me of someone I know … ahem … I’ve lived with cats for as long as I can remember. I felt I was sort of a protector of the indoor/outdoor cats we had when I was a kid. A cat was always welcome in my room. Once away at college, a long line of beloved indoor cats ensued. Right now, we have four cats: a pair of two-year-old silver Bengal girls (one spotted, one marbled), and a seven-year-old brother/sister pair of brown marbled Bengals. They are wonderful cats in their interactions, but a little wild, too! I see cats and can’t help but see the same simple patterns that govern humans: Love goes a long way. Peaceful vibes go a long way. A little food works wonders.

As a huge cat person; This has been my favorite of these all week!

Beautiful cats, too!

Here’s a MUST READ book for all cat owners. It’s called YOUR CAT:Simple New Secrets To A Longer, Stronger LIfe by Elizabeth M. Hodgkins, DVM, Esq. She is THE vet expert on cats. She’s also a researcher, breeder and attorney. This the latest info on cats, and has barely begun to trickle down to vets. Cats are obligatory carnivores. They eat meat. Dogs are omnivores and can eat anything. Cats are NOT small dogs. Dry food is killing our cats slowly with kidney disease, obesity and diabetes. They should never eat corn and grain based dry food. Too much carbs for felines to handle, glycemic level-wise. Only feed them high protein meat meals, either canned food or some home cooked. Don’t get fooled by foods with veggies and cranberries and such in them. It’s bullshit. Also, don’t fall for “life cycle” foods that are for kittens or seniors. More marketing bs. She’s gotten her cat and many others off of insulin and stopped diabetes by getting them off of dry foods. the book teaches you how to read labels and other valuable info. A cat, eating well and protected inside, away from cars and danger, she says should live 20 years or more! Book is available from amazon in paperback and is fascinating. I wish that it had come out 20 years ago so I’d still have a couple of my cats! She worked for Hills for years in the actuarial legal dept. and saw how much harm dry foods can do. Vets get most of their nutrition “education” from Hills and push their rip off foods to clients. I personally by Fancy Feast. Look for high protein like 11%-13% on labels. Avoid any with “gravy”. More marketing bs. It’s wheat gluten used to thicken it. also avoid so called premium pouch foods. Pure junk food. She has a website at http://www.yourcatbook.com. You can read lots of excerpts on Amazon and keep hitting surprise me to see many more pages. Read this book and you will thank me!
