In The News: Thom Yorke, Nirvana, Grant Hart, Daniel Johnston, Noise Addict, Devendra Banhart

thom-yorke370It was a little difficult to discern from the self-written press release, but it appears Radiohead’s Thom Yorke (pictured) is releasing a 12-inch single, “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” b/w “The Hollow Earth,” on September 21. (Digital version available October 6.) A free download accompanies your purchase via the band’s website … Considered one of the most-bootlegged live shows, Nirvana’s headlining stint at the 1992 Reading Festival is officially documented on the self-explanatory Nirvana Live At Reading CD/DVD (Universal), out November 3. A two-LP vinyl version will be available November 17 … That last item naturally leads us to the Foo Fighters, whose career highlights are collected on the equally self-explanatory Greatest Hits (Roswell/RCA), also out November 3. It features two new songs, “Wheels” and “Word Forward,” recorded exclusively for the album … Speaking of hot wax, Grant Hart, formerly of Over/Under darlings Hüsker Dü, returns October 6 with Hot Wax (Con D’or/MVD). It’s his first solo outing, if you can believe it, since 1999’s Good News For The Modern Man … October 6 also sees the release of Is And Always Was, the latest from lo-fi savant Daniel Johnston. Only this time, Jellyfish’s Jason Falkner scrubbed out the lo-fi in his role as producer. Download “Freedom” … Singer/songwriter Ben Lee released the first and only Noise Addict LP, Meet The Real You, in 1996. So it comes as a bit of surprise that the band’s second effort, It Was Never About The Audience, is now available via free download. Joining Lee in the band this time around are obscure indie songsmith Lou Barlow and El May’s Lara Meyerratken … Freak-folker Devendra Banhart’s latest, What Will We Be (Warner Bros.), is out October 27. I think we’ve used this gag before, but the tracks were surely put down shirtless 98 percent of the time … Is it a good idea to name your band after a Harvey Keitel movie? You can decide while listening to Bad Lieutenant’s Never Cry Another Tear (Triple Echo), available October 6 as an exclusive one-week Amazon download, then on CD on October 13 (also only at Amazon). The LP will be available November 10 to anyone who doesn’t want to buy it early from Amazon. The band is the latest project from New Order’s Bernard Sumner, who evidently has stock in Amazon … On a lower-profile, yet still exclusive, scale, Sundazed brings us the previously unissued demo records of Moby Grape’s Alexander “Skip” Spence in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered 10-inch vinyl slabs. There doesn’t appear to be an official title, if that matters … Elegant bastard Scott Weiland, formerly of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver (and rehab), played a September 2 gig at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas to announce the launch of his clothing line, Weiland For English Laundry. We look forward to perusing thrift stores in a few months to see the line’s wide array of leather pants.

I think the point was that when a rock ‘n roller becomes more well-known for drug possession busts than making great music, and then plays a show in Vegas to promote a, uh, clothing line, well…that punchline pretty much writes itself, don’t it? Can I do a Shithead for English Laundry clothing line now, Kelly? I promise there won’t be any leather.

Mr. Weiland’s career switch to fashioner would be a welcome relief to Rock&Roll. The Jonas Bros. have done more for music than he has. Beyond dull…
