A new LP is scheduled for early next year … U2 released The Unforgettable Fire 25 years ago. While the band is touring in stadiums on a stage that makes the Rolling Stones’ usual contraptions look humble, the record will be reissued by Mercury Records on October 27. It’ll be remastered, feature bonus material (including to previously unheard tracks) and be available in about 17 different formats, as per … Looking forward to Vampire Weekend’s second LP? Then January 12 is a big day for you, as Contra (XL) hits the stores. The band (pictured) plays two shows in Canada on October 6 and 8. On October 7, the band will go clothes shopping … On November 3, Fantasy Records will release The Singles Collection, a two-CD/one-DVD box containing all 30 of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s U.S. singles. For the geeks (you know who you are), a separate deluxe vinyl collectors’ edition will be available, featuring reproductions of the original 45s … Speaking of old guys with guitars, Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers will release The Live Anthology (Reprise), a multiple-disc set of recordings drawn from 30 years of concert performances. A five-CD (really?) collector’s deluxe box will be available only at Best Buy on November 22; all other configurations will be available elsewhere November 24 … For better or worse, the Killers are also releasing some live stuff: an 80-minute CD and accompanying DVD that also features a behind-the-scenes documentary. The performances are from two shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall in July, but there’s no title or release date yet … The Clientele’s Bonfires On The Heath (Merge) is out October 6. Man — the sarcastic, jaded, perfunctory tone in which these news items are delivered is positively overwhelming. Do you folks even enjoy writing about music anymore? Is that a dumb question? Perhaps the fact that a new issue hasn’t come out in something like eight or nine months (maybe longer?) says plenty.
