Grant-Lee Phillips’ Happiness: Nellie McKay’s “Normal As Blueberry Pie: A Tribute To Doris Day”

grantleephillipsWhether it was as the guitarist who created the gothic-western landscape of Shiva Burlesque 20 years ago, the even bigger guitar sound of Grant Lee Buffalo that rode herd in the ’90s (while he screwed up his courage to get his feet wet as a singer) or his current solo career (a wonderfully diverse summation of most everything that’s come before), Grant-Lee Phillips has become a consummate musician. Little Moon (Yep Roc) is the kind of record you keep playing until the songs refuse to go away, even long after you’ve switched off the electronics. Phillips is guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week, Read our Q&A with him.

Phillips: I first met Nellie McKay in 2006 at Aimee Mann’s Christmas show in NYC. We were both guests on the tour. It was my introduction to an artist who I have found to be ever compelling and wonderfully unpredictable. She has that kind of voice that has you stopping in your tracks to take in every whimsical word. Normal As Blueberry Pie reveals her love of American vocalist and icon Doris Day, a name you don’t hear too much of these days. Still, Nellie brings new sparkle and her own special charm to some classic songs that were handpicked by Doris herself. Let Normal As Blueberry Pie: A Tribute To Doris Day, out last week, breeze into your ear-ways. Video after the jump.
