Film At 11: Ghostkeeper

Ghostkeeper is the brainchild of guitarist/vocalist Shane Ghostkeeper and drummer/vocalist Sarah Houle. The two fashioned their Pavement-meets-Jon-Spencer aesthetic before recruiting a bassist and second guitarist to round out their sound. With giant cardboard faces and shifting green-screen backdrops of forested vistas, Ghostkeeper’s video for “Haunted,” the first single from its recent self-titled album (on Flemish Eye), is like if Robert Johnson and Stephen Malkmus remade Avatar.

Shout Out Louds Fall Hard: Swedish Designers

SOLlogo2Not long after the release of their second album, 2007’s Our Ill Wills, and months of relentless touring, Sweden’s Shout Out Louds decided to take a six-month break, and its five members—frontman Adam Olenius, bassist Ted Malmros, guitarist Carl Von Arbin, drummer Eric Edman and keyboardist Bebban Stenborg—spread out between Melbourne, Los Angeles and Stockholm. However, despite the distance, it wasn’t long before Olenius was writing new material and sending it out to his bandmates, who all contributed from their remote locations. As a result, the quintet has returned with a fresh, simple sound on third full-length Work (out now on Merge), which the band is currently supporting on a tour of North America and Europe. Shout Out Louds will be guest-editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Q&A with Olenius and our 2007 feature on the band.

Stenborg: Fashion design as a concept has never really interested me. I’ve always turned to Goodwill and grandma’s attic for clothes and old-lady glove shops for accessories. But having spent the past six months at home, I have found myself forced to rethink my strategy (and my budget, kind of) because there really is no place like Sweden as far as designers go. Semi-small brands like minimarket and Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair have completely overthrown my fondness for rattiness, and indie designers like Isabella Idberg (whose dresses actually feel and look sculpted onto your body) have gently and elegantly murdered my inner vintage snob. Don’t get me wrong—I won’t throw away any of my ratty old scooter dresses, and grandma’s old Dior bag will be on my arm until someone cuts it off, but right now, it seems like I’ll be on a porridge-and-water diet this year before I’ll stop shopping Swedish. Rest in peace, Paris and Milan. Stockholm is where it’s all happening.

MP3 At 3PM: Great Elk

greatelk2454Apparently, experience as a dog-sled handler transcribes to beautiful folk songs. After four years working with huskies in rural Alaska, Paul Basile moved back home to Brooklyn to polish off melodies he created on nights by the fire. Basile shares a remarkable physical resemblance to Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, and his band with guitar whiz Patrick Hay, Great Elk, also has a similar musical presence. “Vibrations,” from Great Elk’s self-released, self-titled EP (out June 22), layers acoustic strumming with echoey electric guitar. And it’s Basile’s voice that’s most revealing and best characterizes the song. His gritty vibrato lends style and soul to his lyrics. His pitch isn’t always perfect, and he often sounds like he’s improvising, making his music a physical presence, like warm hands on your cold body. After the EP’s release, look for tour dates along the East Coast.

Shout Out Louds Fall Hard: David Attenborough

Olenius: All I wanted as a kid was to be David Attenborough and walk around in khaki shorts in the jungle, drive a jeep and pet lions. I don’t think it will happen for me, but I saw a show on Animal Planet where Penelope Cruz went to Africa and worked with some elephants or something. I guess I have to become a little bit more famous—so buy our records! The closest I got to that world was when Shout Out Louds went on a swamp safari in Alabama to look for alligators. We didn’t see a single one. We had too many Buds, and it was cold.
