Despite his group’s goofy name and his regular appearance on the teenybopper soap One Tree Hill, Mike Grubb’s musical abilities are no joke. In the video for Wakey!Wakey!’s latest single, “Car Crash” (off Almost Everything I Wish I’d Said The Last Time I Saw You), Grubb glides across the piano and sings his soul in a dark restaurant, backed by band members on string instruments. Together, they create a modern ballad and musical narrative of the beauty and pain of every human interaction. All the while, the camera pans over young couples (played by actors from the One Tree Hill cast) smiling awkwardly at each other over champagne and candle-lit meals—or walking away from each other in the heat of miscommunication.
