Songstress Kathryn Calder gained acclaim as a teenager with her band Immaculate Machines, while most of her peers were getting grounded for smokin’ dope and bringing home report cards stamped with Cs. (Or was that just us?) After her mother discovered her birth family and Calder discovered uncle Carl Newman, she joined with her newly united kin in the New Pornographers. And after touring the world and playing in front of upwards of 40,000 fans at music festivals including Coachella and Glastonbury, Calder is ready to branch out even further with her burgeoning solo career. On “Arrow,” the second single from debut Are You My Mother? (out August 3 via File Under: Music,), she could calm a raging bull or make two people fall in love with each other, thanks to her ethereal coos and syrupy piano progression.
