We’ve been watching Screaming Females slag it out in basements for a few years now. We’d be happy to see them do it for a few more, but with Castle Talk (out September 14 via Don Giovanni), it’s going to be hard to keep them to ourselves. Their sound has always needed something more than an overworked budget PA system anyway. Screaming Females, along with Big Eyes and Omar, are reminding more ignorant music fans in the Northeast that “guitar heroics” and women aren’t mutually exclusive, just in case they missed the last Sleater-Kinney record. Marissa Paternoster gets a lot of deserved comparisons to J Mascis, and “I Don’t Mind It,” the lead single off Castle Talk, is a strong case for anyone who needs to argue on behalf of the Screamales. Which is probably a need that isn’t going to exist for much longer.
