On Tuesday, Grinderman—Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos—returns with Grinderman 2 (Anti-), another quasi-misogynistic, stadium-rock-motivated journey through the glorious swirls of a midlife crisis. The first single, “Heathen Child,” came out this week and is purchasable in either download or limited-edition 12-inch format. The latter features a reworked version of the song featuring legendary guitarist, producer and King Crimson founder Robert Fripp. The themes and ambitions here are the same as on the group’s 2007 debut, but without the overblown sonic muscle that made that album’s “Get It On” and “No Pussy Blues” so victorious. Despite his unmatchable sass and swagger, the “well-read frat-boy” persona Cave adopts for Grinderman may not be quite as charming or convincing the second time around.
