For most bands, the carefree “glory days” come in the beginning, before financial stresses and the desire to eat three full meals a day and not sleep in a van start to take a toll. Minneapolis indie rockers Tapes ’N Tapes have taken the bold move to flow against the current, resurrecting its label (Ibid Records) in the pursuit of creating an album that’s genuinely fun and free of the let’s-go-to-work vibe. Due out January 11, Outside plays as melodic and thought out as any album on the market that was produced with blood, sweat and tears. Taking their time at home was the key, recording and self-producing the album, with Peter Katis (Interpol, the National) contributing to the final mix over a two-week span. First single “Freak Out” combines quick-strumming syncopation with driving drums and the confident vocals of Josh Grier.
