U.K. production team Simian Mobile Disco has seen most of the world since it emerged with its excellent debut Attack Decay Sustain Release in 2005. And that globetrotting is the inspiration behind the duo’s newest album, Delicacies, due out November 30 on the band’s label (also called Delicacies). Indeed, every track on the double-CD set is named for, you guessed it, a delicacy from different corners of the world. “Aspic” (a “savory gelatin made from meat stock” usually associated with French cuisine) is our first taste of what will be SMD’s third album proper. Heavy on analog synths and drum-machine sequences like much of their previous work, the track finds them pushing forward nonetheless, exploring a more straightforward techno approach in lieu of the electro-house style they formerly embraced with the help of rotating vocalists. (Gruff Rhys, Alexis Taylor, Beth Ditto and Chris Keating are just a few of the talented folks that appeared on SMD’s second record, Temporary Pleasures.) There’s less instant gratification, to be sure, but the eight-minute oscillating journey is worth every shred of your patience, regardless.
