Film At 11: Ruby Isle

Ruby Isle—Mark Mallman, Dan Geller (Kindercore Records co-founder) and Aaron LeMay (International Espionage)—plays dance music for the indie-rock set. The trio has recorded dance-floor versions of songs by the likes of Animal Collective, the Decemberists, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Sonic Youth and more. Now the trio has taken on its most ambitious cover project: Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction album. With guest appearances from Nicole Godiva (Waxx Maxx) and Har Mar Superstar, Ruby Isle has successfully pulled off a track-by-track recreation of the classic ’80s album. Wooden Wand’s James Jackson Toth Must Also Love: The Gym

Even James Jackson Toth’s most rabid fans probably can’t keep track of the prolific singer/songwriter’s output. The Lexington, Ky.-based Toth has issued numerous solo and group efforts (including cassettes, CD-Rs, limited-edition vinyl, etc.) under his own name as well as such monikers as WAND, Wooden Wand And The Vanishing Voice, H.P. Witchcraft, the Jescos and the Blood Group. His latest release is Wooden Wand‘s Death Seat (Young God), an impressive 12-track album produced by YG label head and Swans frontman Michael Gira and featuring musical contributions from members of bands such as Lambchop, Silver Jews, Mercury Rev, Glossary and Fire On Fire. Toth is heading out on European and North American tours in the new year, but in the meantime, he will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with him.

Toth: The gym, for me, is a love-to-hate sort of endeavor. Like a lot of delusional jackasses, I use working out as an excuse to continue doing bad things to my body, but there are times I leave the gym feeling positively exuberant. A little Bone Awl on the iPod, some treadmill, some weights, and it’s almost as tranquil as a trip to the grocery store.

Video after the jump.

MP3 At 3PM: Pascal Pinon

Tegan & Sara, the Watson Twins, the Veronicas. Sometimes, twins can make the best built-in bandmates. Our newest twin sensation is an import from Iceland, Pascal Pinon, featuring sisters Jofridur and Asthildur along with friends Halla and Kristin. The band’s self-titled debut, which will be released in the U.S. on December 3 via Morr Music, earned them a nomination for newcomer of the year at last year’s Icelandic Music Awards, and it’s not hard to see why. Songs like “New Beginning” feature whispery vocals and folky, rustic guitar strumming with lyrics that make these girls sound much older and wiser than their 16 years.
