Wooden Wand’s James Jackson Toth Must Also Love: Revolvers

Even James Jackson Toth’s most rabid fans probably can’t keep track of the prolific singer/songwriter’s output. The Lexington, Ky.-based Toth has issued numerous solo and group efforts (including cassettes, CD-Rs, limited-edition vinyl, etc.) under his own name as well as such monikers as WAND, Wooden Wand And The Vanishing Voice, H.P. Witchcraft, the Jescos and the Blood Group. His latest release is Wooden Wand‘s Death Seat (Young God), an impressive 12-track album produced by YG label head and Swans frontman Michael Gira and featuring musical contributions from members of bands such as Lambchop, Silver Jews, Mercury Rev, Glossary and Fire On Fire. Toth is heading out on European and North American tours in the new year, but in the meantime, he will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our Q&A with him.

Toth: The most guns I’ve owned at one time was 12, but now I’m down to less than half that. Guns are expensive, and they’re also fun to trade for old cars and, er, other guns. I’ve shot all manner of heavy artillery, from M16s and AR15s to M1 Garands and Uzis, but my favorite will always be your standard six-shot revolver. I know the typically artillery-crazed MAGNET readership is just dying to know, so I’ll confess that my favorite gun is a Ruger GP100 .357 with a six-inch barrel. As the old-school gun enthusiasts like to say, “A wheelgun is a real gun.” It always goes bang when you need it to, with no gun jams to worry about. Besides, William B. Ruger himself controversially admitted that “no honest man needs more than 10 rounds.” Works for me.

Wooden Wand’s James Jackson Toth Must Also Love: “SportsCenter”

Even James Jackson Toth’s most rabid fans probably can’t keep track of the prolific singer/songwriter’s output. Toth: ESPN’s flagship program isn’t merely an informative, often uproarious show featuring the day’s sports highlights and gossip. SportsCenter also provides me with something akin to psychological balm. I relish few things more than ending a day with a few glasses of Kentucky bourbon and SportsCenter highlights on a loop. Occasionally, during bouts of insomnia, I’ll watch the same highlight six or seven times as the show repeats, and the effect is rivaled only by Terry Riley’s Persian Surgery Dervishes for pure hallucinatory catatonic bliss.

MP3 At 3PM: The White Wires

From the city that gave us Alanis Morissette comes the equally (non)ironic trio the White Wires. Despite their shared hometown of Ottawa, the White Wires have foregone Morissette’s warblings in favor of an honest-to-goodness mixture of pop/punk and power pop. The White Wires will release their second full-length, WWII (Dirtnap), on November 23. Download the LPS’ first single, “Be True to Your School (‘Til You Get Kicked Out),” below.
