KORT’s Kurt Wagner Is Gonna Love You Now: City House

KORT is Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner and solo singer/songwriter Cortney Tidwell, and with covers album Invariable Heartache (City Slang), the duo has recorded a sort of love letter to its hometown of Nashville and the city’s musical past. Eleven of the LP’s dozen tracks were originally recorded in the ’60s and ’70s for the Music City-based Chart Records (a label with huge familial ties for Tidwell), and the 12th song was cut by Tidwell’s mom, Connie Eaton, in 1975 for ABC Dunhill. And while the heartfelt Invariable Heartache is certainly ensconced in Nashville’s storied musical history, it’s a thoroughly modern statement by two of the town’s brightest hopes for Music City’s future being as fertile as its past. Wagner and Tidwell will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Q&A with them.

Wagner: In times of trouble and in times of heartache, nothing quite snaps me out of it better than a fine meal. Of the many choices we have in Nashville these days for food, the one I return to over and over again is City House. Believe me, I’ve tried to find other places to go around town, but in the end, I always keep saying, “I should have gone to City House.” The place is that good. Surprisingly, it’s still not that well known, though I’ve spied “sometimes local” foodies like Robert Plant in there from time to time. It is still the kind of place that will accommodate the likes and dislikes of me. It also begs to mention that the people who run this establishment, led by chef Tandy Wilson, are the nicest, most down to earth I’ve encountered. The building was once an artist studio and foundry, which oddly I ate dinner in many years ago. Imagine my surprise 30 years on that it’s now the treasure it is.

I live in Toronto Kurt, and I always try that adventurous move of trying to ween myself from the restaurant I’m addicted to. I usually end up just drinking too much, as the menu/cooking blows, and I live with the same regret you’ve mentioned.

On a semi-related note, you and your band completely fucking rock.
