Amor de Días—the duo of Alasdair Maclean (Clientele) and Lupe Núñez-Fernández (Pipas)—just released debut album Street Of The Love Of Days via Merge. (Those of you who speak Spanish know that the band’s moniker translates to “love of days,” hence the album title.) Maclean and Núñez-Fernández worked on the 15-track LP for more than three years, and it features guest spots by the likes of Louis Philippe, Damon & Naomi, Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) and Danny Manners. Maclean and Núñez-Fernández will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with them.
Núñez-Fernández: At home, I’m sort of a vegan foodie and baker, and looking for vegan options while on the road has lead to great friendships and to discovering some real favorites. Years ago in Genoa, while on tour through Italy with my other band, Pipas, we were taken under the locals’ arms and introduced to farinata after a late night out. Essentially, it is a thick pancake made out of a chickpea flour batter that’s poured into trays coated with bubbling olive oil, topped with sliced onions, herbs and other toppings, then finished off in the hottest oven. It’s the most delicious and satisfying 4 a.m. snack I’ve ever had in my life! (Save churros, of course; and then again, there were those Estonian dark-rye-bread chunks fried in garlic oil—fried bread is almost like a muse to me.) Incidentally, the name means “floured” and always makes me think about a character from Dante’s Inferno, Farinata degli Uberti, who was condemned to hell for being a heretic. He was of the opinion of Epicurus, that the soul dies with the body, and it’s just as well to enjoy the pleasures of good food while you can.
