In The News: Sonic Youth, T Bone Burnett, Bush, Human League, John Cale, Mike Doughty And More

On September 6, the 20th birthday of 1991: The Year Punk Broke will be celebrated with the film’s first-ever release on DVD (via UMe). The film documents Sonic Youth’s 1991 European festival tour, with footage from other bands such as Nirvana and Dinosaur Jr. In conjunction with the release, Hits Are For Squares—featuring a career-spanning selection of Sonic Youth songs curated by various artists, actors and directors (including Catherine Keener, Beck, Radiohead, Diablo Cody, Dave Eggers and Michelle Williams)—will be available August 23 via UMe … Last October, T Bone Burnett gathered together a collection of musicians including Elton John, Elvis Costello, Gregg Allman, Jeff Bridges, Neko Case, Jim James and many others. The group was named the Speaking Clock Revue, and it played a benefit concert at the Beacon Theater in New York. T Bone Burnett Presents: The Speaking Clock Revue showcases 11 performances from this concert, and proceeds from the album will benefit the Participant Foundation (supporting the inclusion of music and arts education in public-school systems). It’s out on October 18 via Shout! Factory … Bush has announced it will release its first album in 10 years, The Sea Of Memories, on September 13 via the band’s own Zuma Rock imprint. Plans for a fall tour are in the works … Also returning after a decade is the Human League. The band’s ninth studio album, Credo (MB3/EMI), is set for a digital release on August 16 and a physical release on August 23. This fall, the Human League will tour North America with support from other ’80s giants such as Men Without Hats, the B-52s and Berlin … John Cale has signed to Domino imprint Double Six, which will issue his new five-song EP, Extra Playful, on September 19 … Gigantic Music recently inked Gringo Star and will release the band’s sophomore album, Count Yer Lucky Stars, on September 27 … Yes and Also Yes is the new record from Mike Doughty, due out August 30 via Snack Bar/Megaforce/Sony Red … On September 13, Chuck Ragan’s third release, Covering Ground, will be out on SideOneDummy … Jazz quintet Spyro Gyra’s new album, A Foreign Affair, is due out September 13.
