As the frontiers of music push ever into experimentation and misty chillwave, old-school garage rock can be a breath of fresh air. So it goes with Jack Oblivian’s Rat City (Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum). The title track exemplifies the classic garage/punk subset, including the tendency toward repetitious refrains and heavily syncopated instrumentals. However, Oblivian garners much acclaim for his drumbeats, and the beautiful backbone of “Rat City” demands attention. Oblivian has been on the scene since for years, from the founding of the Oblivians in 1993 to the end of the Compulsive Gamblers in 2003. Download “Rat City” below.
