Indie music is wistfully low-tech nowadays. Sometimes this trend is homey and charming, but other times there’s a hollowness to records that sound like they were made in people’s bathrooms. Shearwater hopes to break this lo-fi cycle with upcoming Sub Pop debut Animal Joy (out February 14). A band that is not afraid to make its sound as big and loud as possible, Shearwater seems oddly out of place with the current roster of indie wunderkinds, which is exactly where the group wants to be.
