You may think we’re crazy, but that could only be because you haven’t seen Eleanor Friedberger‘s exhilarating live solo show lately, if ever. You heard it here first: This suburban-Chicago native is going to be a huge star. Of course, we love Fiery Furnaces, the Brooklyn-based duo she’s played in since 2000 with her brother Matthew. But the overt (and covert) references to Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders and (yes) Patti Smith in Eleanor’s solo work since the release of Last Summer (Merge), her debut solo disc, have become inescapable. No she hasn’t got “five and five” for the marquee (how about “seven and eleven?”), but her march toward total domination has already begun. Better get in line while you still can.
