Film At 11: Chief Boima

Chief Boima, a Sierra Leonean-American DJ, infuses a traditional African song with new-age style with his remix of Sorie Kondi’s “Without Money No Family.” He pioneered a new genre, the video remix, by juxtaposing footage of New York street life with Kondi’s original video, a six-minute portrayal of life in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It’s an appropriate move for Boima’s new album, African In New York (Dutty Artz). Here, he combines distinct musical styles to bring together continents. Watch the clip below.
