JBM Makes MAGNET A Mix Tape

JBM, the moniker of Canadian singer/songwriter Jesse Marchant, creates songs with a startling depth of emotion. His music possesses a strange, tender sadness and thoughtful melancholy reminiscent of Sun Kil Moon or Keaton Henson, but with Marchant’s distinct fingerprints. His new album, Stray Ashes, drops May 22. Check out the cool mix tape he made MAGNET below.

“Only Now” (download):

Scott Walker “It’s Raining Today”
What is to like or dislike here, I believe, is obvious. People seem to love or hate Walker’s voice. I love it, especially in a song like this. The almost motionless cat-claw strings all throughout are so specifically what he does well. Taking a plain crooner ballad and throwing it eerily off-kilter. Beautiful song. Video

Cass McCombs “Harmonia”
This song is outright hypnotic and features some of my most favorite pedal-steel playing of all time. McCombs and his band are masters of performing long musical passages, which are essentially jams, without making them feel self-indulgent. They do it live, too, and I am all in for it. Very soulful. Video

Peggy Lee “So What’s New?”
I like Peggy Lee, and the lyrics in this one hit me. Video

Tupac Shakur “Dear Mama”
Tupac was my favorite rapper growing up. I liked the way he said things. This is one of his heartwarmers for his mom. I believe it. I like how classic the instrumentation is and how it’s not a big fuss hip-hop production. My favorite thing about Tupac was his voice and delivery. Video

Wilco “Either Way”
I loved this song from the first few seconds that I heard of it. The opening lick; every sound and performance on the recording is perfect. The song is plain beautiful. Nels Cline’s guitar work on this record amazes me. Video

Willy Mason “Riptide”
I listened to this album a lot when it came out. There is something pure about Mason’s voice and that speaks to me. The imagery of this song is vivid and transporting, and I like the place that it takes me too. I like the melody also. Video

Fleetwood Mac “As Long As you Follow”
Don’t know what to say about this one. I just like it. Like all of Mac’s stuff—it’s immaculately performed and produced. I hear this music, and I think, “Oh, this is what really well made music sounds like.” Video

Pageants “Deep Ring”
These two are old friends, and they sent me some demos of a few tracks a little while back and I really liked them; it’s always nerve-racking getting your friends’ music. I love Rebecca’s vocals on this one. Video

Bob Dylan “Hurricane”
I’ve been listening to Desire a lot lately. I like how incidental the recordings sound, and the songs are really good. I like the urgency of this one. It just keeps on going. I admire how Dylan was able to tell so long a story, so literally, and make it musical. Video

Chris Isaak “Graduation Day”
Isaak has such a distinctive sound. I like his music for driving at night. Video

Other Lives “Dust Bowl III”
This is a very good song. Video

Phosphorescent “A Picture of Our Torn Up Praise”
Hard to pick one song off this record. I put it on a little while ago in the car, driving through the Texas desert at sundown with my brother. It may be the best record for such an occasion. It is a world of it’s own. Video

AA Bondy “Rte. 28/Believers”
Listen to this record and be taken to no man’s land. It is beautiful. Video

My Morning Jacket “Moving Away”
This one sounds like an old classic. I really, really like it. And nicely put together. Video

Portishead “Glory Box”
Revisited songs from my teens recently. This one still hit hard. Video
