Film At 11: The Avengers

Don’t be confused by the blockbuster superhero movie The Avengers. A double-CD called Avengers (on the Water label) moves twice as fast as any Marvel Comics character with five times the bonecrunching stopping power. It’s the long out-of-print original studio material by fabled San Francisco punk band the Avengers, led by the volcanic Penelope Houston. During the group’s brief (1977-79) lifespan, Houston, guitarist Greg Ingraham, bassist Jimmy Wilsey and drummer Danny Furious shared stages with punk elite: X, the Go-Go’s, Crime, Dils, Flipper, Nuns, Mutants, Dead Kennedys. And they opened the final show ever by Britain’s notorious Sex Pistols at San Francisco’s Winterland. They also laid down blistering studio material such as “We Are The One,” “I Believe In Me,” “Car Crash” and “The American In Me,” whose video details the band’s most telling couplet: “It’s the American in me that makes me watch the blood run out of the bullet hole in his head/It’s the American in me that never wonders why Kennedy was murdered by the FBI.” We are proud to premiere the video forĀ “The American In Me” today on magnetmagazine.com.
