Normal History Vol. 169: The Art Of David Lester

Every Saturday, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 28-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

I wouldn’t start anything with a man who had children of any age, from newborn to 40-plus (years). The current trend of hyper-parenting into adulthood is rooted in parental guilt for having ruined the kid’s life. The father continues helping the kid with their problems, thus reducing the likelihood that the kid will ever be allowed to experience adulthood. The father is determined to continue ruining the kid’s life and kids-these-days don’t have the backbone to ditch their creepy fathers; they opt to bleed them dry while pushing all their buttons. Dad hands over the problem-solving money, crash pad or services that actual adults must earn. This symbiosis holds no appeal in girlfriend mode. The kids are the priority. Forever. It’s like going out with a married guy who is never going to leave his wife. The guy is 100{e5d2c082e45b5ce38ac2ea5f0bdedb3901cc97dfa4ea5e625fd79a7c2dc9f191} unavailable to conduct a relationship (with a woman … me). Kids and their parents have entered into a marriage. Father = husband and mother = wife. The child uses the dynamic without contributing anything. The mother cleans, cooks, coddles and mends. The father gives out money and provides shelter from financial responsibility past, present and future.
