From The Desk Of Turing Machine’s Scott DeSimon: Violent Bullshit

The complex math rock/angular indie/krautrock mix as embarked upon by New York’s Turing Machine since 1998 came to an abruptly tragic end in November 2009. On the eighth of that month, 34-year-old drummer Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs was killed in a freak elevator-shaft accident in a building where he was attending a fundraiser. Understandably, surviving members Justin Chearno (guitar) and Scott DeSimon (bass) put the band to rest after losing an integral piece of their musical puzzle and close friend. So, it was to everyone’s surprise when, earlier this year, Turing Machine announced its return with a new album, What Is The Meaning Of What (Temporary Residence Ltd.). Chearno and DeSimon will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on them.

DeSimon: With hardcore and stand-up comedy, the line between brilliant and awful is a thin one. Too often hardcore can be unintentionally hilarious, while stand-up can devolve into intense bursts of loud (unfunny) anger. This is why Violent Bullshit is so fantastic. Musically, they nail what they do: write and play short, fast hardcore songs that reference the breadth of the genre; the good parts, anyway. They are a ferocious live band, especially considering how unassuming they all are offstage (our favorite kind of ferocious live band). But we’d still be a little leery about paying $8 for a 20-minute set if the in-between song banter wasn’t so hilarious. Jay Green, former singer of Orchid and Panthers, takes questions from the audience, and his answers always slay. Then, somehow, all five of them transition back into being a great band again and destroy the next song. Violent Bullshit has an album coming out soon on Adult Problems. Buy it for the shirtless cover shot alone.
