From The Desk Of The Spinto Band’s Thomas Hughes: RØÅR

The members of Wilmington, Del.’s Spinto Band have been playing together since the mid-1990s, when they were still in high school. A decade and a half later finds Nick Krill (vocals/guitar), Thomas Hughes (bass/vocals), Jeffrey Hobson (drums), Sam Hughes (keyboards), Joey Hobson (guitar) perfecting pop sounds on the recent full-length, Shy Pursuit, in their newly built recording studio, scoring films, starting a record label and searching for the perfect cup of coffee. They will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with Krill.

Thomas Hughes: I met Owen Evans when we shared the bill with his fantastic band, Asleep In The Sea, in Phoenix. Years went by and bands broke up but we kept in touch and started working together. In the last couple of years he’s been putting out records under the name RØÅR, and they’re cooler than the other side of your pillow. Nick mixed and engineered these albums, and I was lucky enough to play on the last one (if only because he couldn’t find a left-handed bass). Owen is an educated student of pop music, and his mastery of the form often resembles a plate-spinning act with him balancing a dizzying assortment of melodic hooks, harmonic twists and rhythmic turns within the confines of one song. Their structures have a mysterious inner-logic but never fail to deliver endlessly listenable ear feasts. Definitely one of the greatest songwriters living today and an all-around great guy.
