From The Desk Of The Spinto Band’s Sam Hughes: Running A Marathon

The members of Wilmington, Del.’s Spinto Band have been playing together since the mid-1990s, when they were still in high school. A decade and a half later finds Nick Krill (vocals/guitar), Thomas Hughes (bass/vocals), Jeffrey Hobson (drums), Sam Hughes (keyboards), Joey Hobson (guitar) perfecting pop sounds on the recent full-length, Shy Pursuit, in their newly built recording studio, scoring films, starting a record label and searching for the perfect cup of coffee. They will also be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with Krill.

Sam Hughes: I’ve been a casual runner for about four years now, usually covering about 15-25 miles a week and zero miles a week if we’re on tour. I decided that I’d run a marathon this year because it’s always represented an interesting physical challenge in my mind. As of this writing, I’m about to tackle the hardest week of the 18-week training program, the one where I have to run 20 miles in a day. It’s become slightly less intimidating as the weeks have gone by, but those days of the long run can still truly be a battle. Keeping up with training while traveling to SXSW in Austin for a week, for instance, provided a interesting challenge of running on hotel treadmills along with the deserty Austin suburbs, and keeping myself away from too many free Lone Stars the day before I finished my 15-mile run. At the moment, this is the only marathon I ever plan to run, but I suppose I’ll have a better idea after I (hopefully) cross the finish line.
