From The Desk Of The Cribs’ Gary Jarman: Teeth

In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull (Wichita), the follow-up to 2009’s enormously successful Ignore The Ignorant, represents a physical return to the Cribs’ original band-of-Brit-brothers format—Gary Jarman on bass/vocals, his twin Ryan on guitar/vocals and younger sibling Ross on drums—after the departure of the massively influential Johnny Marr. The Smiths guitarist added sinewy guitar and a palpable sense of maturation to the Cribs’ already potent sound, and given the new LP’s blend of visceral raw-punk energy and full-bodied pop melodicism, Marr’s two-year tenure with the band left an obvious mark on it creative approach. Gary will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our recent feature on the Cribs.

Jarman: Teeth was a band that we met when we recorded at Steve Albini’s EAR Studios in Chicago. They were in just before us and left quite an impression on us. Their music is heavy, driving and very passionate. The band was founded by multi-instrumentalist John Grabski, who was battling terminal cancer at the time and turned his experiences with this into the inspiration for his art to create a record that is very starkly raw and sincere. Everett True would later call it “the finest grunge I have heard in many a decade” Unfortunately, John passed away in March this year, shortly before his album was released. I think fans of early Nirvana/Melvins will really dig this, but I would like for everyone to check it out.
