The Mountain Goats‘ John Darnielle remains one of the most prolific artists making music today. Although some may miss his glorious lo-fi days in the ’90s, no one can deny that his move toward more studio production in recent years has opened up more musical possibilities. “Cry For Judas,” the first sample from the upcoming Transcendental Youth (out October 2 via Merge), is a perfect example of that stylistic example. Who would have expected such a powerful crescendo of horns from the Mountain Goats back in 1999? Nonetheless, Darnielle’s strengths continue to shine: his poetic voice, the sincerity of his emotion and his ability to sing with a uniquely personal accessibility. Download “Cry For Judas” below.
