From The Desk Of Little Hurricane’s Celeste “C.C.” Spina: Suitcases

Forgive the members of blues-rock duo Little Hurricane if they describe the past year as a whirlwind. Since their first practice in drummer Celeste “C.C.” Spina’s apartment in late 2009, they’ve gone from playing for crowds they could add up on one hand to earning the title of San Diego’s best new band and landing coveted spots at South By Southwest, Austin City Limits and Lollapalooza. Despite the fuss they’ve kicked up with their live shows and debut album, Homewrecker (Unknown Breakthrough), success hasn’t translated into overconfidence. Spina will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new Little Hurricane feature.

Spina: Our first practice Tone showed up at my door with a ratty tweed suitcase he converted into a guitar amp. I knew I found the right person to form a band with. Since then, we have collected many old and beat up suitcases for all sorts of things. We have large and small ones that serve as amps. When I can’t travel with my drum kit, we throw a mic in one and use it as a kick drum. We use them to transport our merch and percussion gear. Suitcases, there’s nothing they can’t do!
