From The Desk Of RJD2: The Excalibur Four-Tray Food Dehydrator

RJD2LogoRJD2 has had quite the curious career. The Eugene, Ore., native lives in West Philly, has transitioned from dirty, jazzy hip hop to wonky electropop, leapt from El-P’s Def Jux label in 2004 after several critically acclaimed albums to his own RJ’s Electrical Connections in 2010 (with his The Third Hand LP at the XL label in between). Though he doesn’t think of himself as a film composer, he has one of the most recognizable theme songs ever: AMC’s Mad Men. Now, he’s changed his sound around completely with one of the most compelling albums of 2013 in More Is Than Isn’t. RJD2 will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new Q&A with him.

FoodDehydrator

RJD2: I’ve got a fig tree, and it’s kicking major ass this year, so from maybe late July to mid-September, it starts cranking out figs. At a rate that is impossible to keep up with. Last year, I made just about a years’ worth of fig jam—it got me through to about June. But canning is hard work—enter the fuckin’ Excalibur. This thing definitely bumped shit up a notch for me this year. I didn’t have to struggle to get all the figs frozen or canned, I just halved them, ran ’em thru for about 24 hours, and boom—instant snack. My son loves the dried figs, and if you hit ’em with a little cinnamon and powdered ginger, it’s just perfect. I’ve got bags and bags of these right now, and can’t wait to work on some newtons or cookies or something.
