From The Desk Of Dead Meadow’s Jason Simon: Burning Spear

JasonSimonLogoOn new album Warble Womb (Xemu), Dead Meadow continues going its own way with a thick, dense sound that includes traces of folk, metal, ’60s rock, swampy blues and murky psychedelia. Hints of Howlin’ Wolf and Neil Young also go drifting through the mix from time to time. The long hours the band puts into its music is evident on every track of Warble Womb, an album that took three years to put together. The songs were shaped in Dead Meadow’s home studio and involved experiments with new sounds and recording techniques. Guitarist Jason Simon will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Simon: I love the voice of Winston Rodney (a.k.a. Burning Spear). It’s so warm and comforting. At times, I find his voice to almost resemble a muted trumpet. No one else sounds like Burning Spear. I love all his early Studio One stuff and the first couple Jack Ruby records he did. There’s a reason in the movie Rockers (which is one of my faves) when Horsemouth is down and out having just got his scooter stolen, he seeks out the Burning Spear for some solace. Burning Spear proceeds to take him down to the beach, pull a spliff from his sock and sing him a tune.
