Gonzo troubadour Todd Snider is the de facto leader of Hard Working Americans, a band that evolved out of his friendship with Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools. The group’s self-titled debut began as a collection of Snider’s favorite songs, many from past tourmates like country traditionalist Kieran Kane (“The Mountain Song”) and the Bottle Rockets’ Brian Henneman (“Welfare Music”). Two of the album’s most memorable tracks (“Another Train” and “I Don’t Have A Gun”) are credited to Will Kimbrough, who played in Snider’s ’90s backup band, the Nervous Wrecks. Snider and Schools will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our brand new feature on them.
Schools: The American Visionary Art Museum greets visitors with an old school bus entirely encrusted with broken mirrors and sporting various plastic flowers and woodland critters. Once inside the glass and brick building, you will discover three floors of rotating curated exhibits spanning more than a century of visionary self-realized paintings, carvings, sculpture and installations sure to amaze and amuse. Running through August is an exhibit titled “Human, Soul & Machine: The Coming Singularity!” tat features the works of artists such as Kenny Irwin Jr and Alex Grey. This exhibit asks the question, “Two billion personal computers later, post DNA-sequencing, are we on the road to becoming a better, healthier, happier, less warlike, human race?” See for yourself, grab some lunch, and drop some cash in one of the best gift shops since MOMA NYC put all their coffee-table art books on sale. My young friend Nico is particularly fond of The Magic Farting Post that is the sonic component of the museum’s treasured “Flatulence Exhibit” in the basement. No further comment needed.
