From The Desk Of Delta Spirit: “Nathan For You”

Delta Spirit’s new album, Into The Wide (Dualtone), is full of anti-war and pro-working-class songs, steeped in literary and biblical images that will make them resonate with almost any listener. The music is deep and moody, playing off the sound of chiming rock guitars, driving rhythms and anthemic vocals against a thick wall of dark, almost industrial noise. The songs paint pictures of the disenfranchised, disillusioned and downcast citizens of our country, folks struggling to get by, but still maintaining their faith in the promises of the American dream. Delta Spirit will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on the band.

NathanForYou

Kelly Winrich: I’m a little late on the Nathan For You train. I can speak for the band here in saying this is collectively a big favorite in Delta Spirit. I started watching at the beginning of the second season and have become obsessed. Quite possibly one of the funniest TV shows I’ve ever seen. It’s a reality show, making fun of other reality shows like The Profit or Bar Rescue, where Nathan (as a successful business major/entrepreneur character) brings his ideas to small businesses. The catch is that his ideas are idiotic and ridiculous, and somehow he manipulates these people into going along with them, which probably has a lot to do with the fact that there are cameras filming everything and they think they’re on a legitimate show. Some of his ideas miraculously work, and if you haven’t seen the actual show, you’ve probably seen some of the viral videos that stem from the show. The pig rescuing the baby goat from the pond was a pretty big one; Dumb Starbucks was a high point. If you don’t get dead-pan sarcasm, or are sensitive to people getting fucked with and/or being made a fool of, you probably won’t like this show. For me, every episode I laugh so hard that I need to take a nap afterward. It’s equally comical as it is draining. Nathan never laughs (unless he awkwardly means to) or breaks character, which is pretty amazing because of how awkward all of the situations are. Favorite running joke in the series is the “straight body-building message board.” Super fans will know what I’m talking about 😉
