From The Desk Of Brett Netson: Disinformation/Dangerous Minds/Richard Metzger

You probably know Brett Netson from his work with Built To Spill and Caustic Resin. Now he’s back with the excellent Scavenger Cult EP, credited to Brett Netson & Snakes. Netson will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week.

Netson: Richard Metzger is (one of?) the creator(s) of the Disinformation and Dangerous Minds websites. Metzger has managed to negotiate his way through the Internet shit storm and has made clear statements about western culture without being too precious or pedantic. I guess it’s the irreverent tone of Dangerous Minds and how there’s humor solidly integrated into the dialog. It takes good old-fashioned hits at the established and helpless corporatist media narrative by just marveling at all different kinds of the provocative, and most often providing helpful information. There are a number of different things all integrated into the Dangerous Minds blog-format website. Simple clean pages with little of the usual Internet noise. For me, the methods are part of the statement. You got a simple low noise blog format with stories of the crazy, the beautiful and all the cooked and disturbed art and culture in the world without any deliberate time waster bullshit.

Early on, Metzger was a talk-show host in the style of Art Bell and has done various great and provocative things with Disinfo. Disinformation: The Interviews compiled interviews done by Metzger and was a potent read. The wild variety and fearless talk from the likes of Genesis P Orridge to Douglas Rushkoff made for a solid book of subversive politics and art. The nice-looking book also was perfect for “coffee table” placement, for whomever to stumble across.

Book Of Lies, about the occult, was also a blast to read. The whole story of how he ripped off AT&T to pay for all this stuff is a wholesome tale of how a decent person should behave in a hyper-corporatist world. I love it all.

Video after the jump.
