From The Desk Of The Foxymorons: Guinness

David Dewese and Jerry James, the friends that make records as the Foxymorons, met at church camp when they were in high school. They discovered they had an affinity for noisy, primitive rock bands. Since they both played rudimentary guitar, they thought about starting a band. Eventually, the duo honed its chops and began writing and recording. Although they’d never played live, their debut album, Calcutta, got stellar reviews in Pitchfork and Paste. As soon as it was out, Dewese moved to Nashville to play in an alt-country band. James stayed in Texas. They’ve maintained a long-distance collaboration ever since. New LP Fake Yoga has elements drawn from country and pop music, including Beach Boys-flavored harmonies, but the album is dominated by their distorted, almost metallic guitar work. James and Dewese will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our new feature on them.

Guinness

James: There are a lot of beer snobs in the world. And my corner of the world—Fort Worth, Texas—is full of them. I’m told that we’re enjoying something of a beer renaissance. Every bar/restaurant in my town touts their selection of “craft beer.” (A term that brutishly shoved its way into the lexicon only a few years ago and is evidently here to stay. And a term most commonly used by hairy males who own at least one T-shirt with Bill Murray emblazoned on the front.) These days, even sports bars that serve menu items with names like donkey balls desperately want you to know about their craft-beer selection. Every beer drinker has his/her preference: pale ales, IPAs, stouts, lagers, wheat beers, etc., and the countless variations thereof. (That’s not to mention the reverse-beer snobs, i.e. the David Changs of the world, who earnestly and un-ironically state their preference for Bud Light.) That said, let me humbly submit to you that the best beer in the world is—at least this time of year—one that your local pub probably already serves: Guinness. While my band—i.e., David and I—are each fairly opinionated and can disagree about any number of things, there exists a band consensus on the absolute perfection of a well-pulled pint of Guinness. It’s the unofficial beer of the Foxymorons. (Unofficial, that is, until Guinness offers us a paid sponsorship.) There really is no beer as comforting and delicious in these frigid winter months. What’s that? You think there is? Well, my friend, drink it.
