Essential New Music: Laser’s “Night Driver”

Laser

The sound plied by Laser—the ethereally jumpy trio fronted by Reverie Sound Revue and ex-Broken Social Scene vocalist Lisa Lobsinger—isn’t reminiscent of the libidinous blood-flow-to-swimsuit-covered-areas dance palpitation of fellow Canucklehead Merrill Beth “Peaches” Nisker, but a shining example of what should be accompanying Fraulein Nisker’s sheet-staining turpitude.

The pottery kiln warmth of the rhythm section lays a solid foundation for Lobsinger’s sensual voice, coquettish whisper and throaty hum, as she pours a syrupy—yet subliminally prickly—helping of her pipes over synth-pop and guitars breaching post-punk’s salad days and a Jan Hammer soundtrack. If Phil Collins’ solo career had a younger sister who grew up on Miami Vice reruns, Roxette, latter-day Don Caballero and St. Vincent, well, there’s your dynamite with a laser beam. And probably the most confusing (if not horrendous) comparison you’ll ever read in MAGNET.
