Essential New Music: So Pitted’s “neo”

SoPitted

Usually, we’d be quick to dismiss a band that names itself after a viral video, but since these guys named it after our spirit animal—arguably the dumbest, most excited surfer dude ever caught on video—we gotta give So Pitted the big thumbs-up. That the group makes the kind of propulsive, aggro noise rock that scores the surf flicks in our dreams—in our dreams because we suck at surfing and we would never let anyone actually videotape us in the act—is another reason to double on our endorsement.

Reminiscent of the ’90s’ heaviest, gnarliest acts—think: Unsane, Karp, throwing cinder blocks from highway overpasses—So Pitted grafts seething anger and morbid humor to heavy discordance and machine-gun percussion. Whether it’s the feedback squalls and staccato guitar stabs of “Feed Me” or the twitchy, glitchy “Get Out Of My Room,” So Pitted is constantly poking and prodding at its audience with a wicked glee and demented smile.
