From The Desk Of Vanessa Carlton: Morning Smoothie

Liberman is Vanessa Carlton’s latest solo set and fifth overall. With classical-motif tracks like “Blue Pool,” “Take It Easy” and backward-masking-dense closer “Ascension,” Carlton has seriously upped her game, and is now composing complex etudes that easily eclipse her chiming Grammy-nominated hit from 2002, “A Thousand Miles.” Carlton will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our feature on her.

Smoothie

Carlton: This drink covers a lot of bases and is a great way to get nutrients while not spending a lot of time preparing food and eating it. My daughter is part smoothie, ’cause I drank one of these every morning when I was pregnant. I had a super, happy, healthy, robust, bouncing baby, so I figure these ingredients are good. Warning: I made this recipe up myself.
A large handful of spinach
A piece or two of kale
A small banana
A medjool date
Two squirts of flax oil
A heaping teaspoon of almond butter (no sugar or salt added)
More than a pinch of cinnamon
Three large ice cubes
Then pour in almond milk until it covers half of all the previous ingredients.
Blend until smooth and creamy. (FYI: I recommend a Vitamix. Don’t be afraid of a refurbished one … they’re cheaper and fine.)
