From The Desk Of Vanessa Carlton: Backyard Fire Tips

Liberman is Vanessa Carlton’s latest solo set and fifth overall. With classical-motif tracks like “Blue Pool,” “Take It Easy” and backward-masking-dense closer “Ascension,” Carlton has seriously upped her game, and is now composing complex etudes that easily eclipse her chiming Grammy-nominated hit from 2002, “A Thousand Miles.” Carlton will be guest editing magnetmagazine.com all week. Read our feature on her.

Backyard

Carlton: To create seating for your circle of friends ask your local firewood guy for some leftover stumps. That’s what my husband did. It was a good move. These stumps will last you a while. Note: Once fungus starts growing on the wood, you need to get new stumps cause even in the dark no one wants to sit on that. My husband is in charge of the fire, and if he were writing this, he would suggest a blowtorch. A blowtorch is a great tip. We have insta-fires at ours. It’s great. Especially when it’s cold. It’s nice to have a good bottle of whiskey to pass around, but make sure to always offer water or weird flavored root beer to your non-drinking friends. A great backyard is never dependent upon alcohol, but most people will leave when you run out of it.
