Essential New Music: Fitz And The Tantrums’ “Fitz And The Tantrums”

Fitz

Fitz And The Tantrums come roaring out of the gate on this self-titled effort with “Hand Clap,” a song that chugs along on a backbreaking beat and a chorus that lifts you to pop-music heaven. Their retro-soul sound may draw inspiration from Stax and Motown, but they have a bright pop edge that harks back to the soulful AM radio hits of yesteryear, augmented by the in-your-face production of Jesse Shatkin (Pink, Kelly Clarkson).

“Complicated” is a joyous “hate to love you, baby” song that celebrates the sexual side of a dysfunctional relationship with a sharp, ironic lyric and another impressive hook. “Roll Up” will demolish any dance floor with its bright keys and forceful horn stabs. “Do What You Want” has a hint of exuberant masochism in its punchy rhythm. The other tracks are just as noteworthy; all of them meaty, beaty, big and bouncy.
