At Boot & Saddles, Kolars backed up its thrilling performance style—Rob Kolar on guitar and vocals, Lauren Brown becoming one with the drums—with equally thrilling, sweaty, sexy and memorable rockabilly/disco tunes. Standouts included “Dangerous” and “Dizzy,” both off the L.A. husband/wife duo’s self-titled debut from last year.
Calliope Musicals were also fun to watch, covering nearly every inch of the stage that wasn’t claimed by the six band members (and occasional popup spaceman/tiger) with lights, blowup astronauts and other trippy paraphernalia that neatly complimented the psych-party vibe. Color/Sweat, the Austin band’s second LP, is out June 14 via Rhyme & Reason.
