Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 36-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

I built a house without doors
ended up on the outside
when I’d sunk the final nail
I built a ladder
without steps
to climb up to the window I’d set too high
I made a shovel to burrow down and in
shaped the metal to a point
and hit solid rock
I tried to peel back the wall
with a crowbar
wrecking what I thought I’d finished
