Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 37-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
It was a thrill to be interviewed by Brent Bambury in the CBC’s Montréal studio in 1986. I can hear the nervousness in the low volume on my voice before the engineer moved the mic closer. I was totally thrown for a loop after they played “Phone’s Unplugged” and Brent said, “That’s an angry song, Jean.” I shoulda had a better response, but it would be many years before I understood manipulation well enough to engage in meaningful repartee about the situation that produced that song.
