Of the hundreds of faces David Lester draws every year for his graphic novels, very few of them are animals. Here, with the dog’s expression matching that of its human companions’ abhorrence of injustice, I find another level of intensity in what, at first glance, feels like a more chaotic depiction of protest. It makes me want to go back and check out the film that shows the horses he drew for his graphic novel about the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike.
