Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 39-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
When we’re young, there’s something almost reprehensible about the idea of memories as they pertain to older people. Turns out, memories are a lot of fun! Dave’s drawing is, in a way, the opposite of gravity. The reaching out and into vibrantly colored shapes that could be past experiences represented in this way. Memories. I’m totally taking liberties with Dave’s work, but that’s my job both in Mecca Normal and here, in this column. A responsibility and opportunity I don’t take lightly.
Sidebar: I don’t think Dave personally knows anyone with fingernails this long.
