MAGNET Exclusive: Premiere Of Trampled By Turtles’ “Starting Over” Video

“It started out as a meditation on accepting the new beginnings often offered to us in life,” says Trampled By Turtles frontman Dave Simonett, explaining the intention behind “Starting Over,” the fourth single from the esteemed Minnesota sextet’s new album, Alpenglow (BanjoDad). “I was thinking about how much our perspective can dictate how we handle large transitions.”

For all you city types, “alpenglow” is the surreal, smoldering red and pink light that envelopes a mountain range on the horizon as the day transitions from day to night (and night to day). Fittingly, transition is a prevalent theme throughout Alpenglow.

“I never really notice that stuff when I’m writing,” says Simonett. “But sometimes after a record is put together, I notice common threads that run through the whole thing. All the songs were written fairly close together, so I guess that shouldn’t be surprising.”

Simonett notes that Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy brought an “open mind” to his lithe production work on the album. “He helped us dissect the arrangements and see if there might be any other interesting ways to approach them,” says Simonett. “I mean, the guy eats, sleeps and breathes songwriting, so it was a real treat to have his perspective on these songs. I don’t think any of them remained unchanged from the versions I brought at the outset of the sessions.”

We are proud to premiere the video for “Starting Over” today at MAGNET.
