Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
The audience at this show was very quiet at this point. Likely because I told a few people to leave if they wanted to keep talking. Funny place to do it because it was a College Music Journal (CMJ) event where bands are basically supposed to be impressing journalists in attendance, not telling them to leave. Please pass the rule book.
Playing NYC was different every time we did it. There was a private show we played for German futurists (where are they now?), and for some unknown reason, Matador’s Johan Kugelberg arrived wearing a bulletproof vest. Did that really happen? Yes, I can see him in my mind’s eye.
