Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.
While the title of this song is about my online-dating experiences, it also feels like a weird take on a strange tour I did in 1998. If anyone had told me I’d be standing on a huge stage in front of 1,500 or so people interjecting Mecca Normal songs into the middle of an Indigo Girls song, I would have wondered how they became so confused about so many things. Sure, we share an activist nature, and yes, there are basic similarities in our primarily voice-and-guitar structures, but they’re folk and we’re punk.
